What stump grinding is
A grinder's cutting wheel carries tungsten-carbide teeth that shave the stump into fine mulch, working from the top down and out to the sides. Standard grinding takes the stump 150–300mm below soil level and leaves a shallow crater filled with wood chip.
Rake the area tidy and you can turf or plant over it. The remaining deep roots stay in the ground and rot away over the following years — they're inert once the stump is gone, because there's no crown left to send up suckers.

What full stump removal is
Removal means grinding deeper, then excavating the crown and root plate so the ground is genuinely clear of timber. The root material is dug out, leaving a clean hole ready for your builder's fill.
It costs more and disturbs more of the section, but it's the right call when something structural is going over the top.

Which one should you choose?
Choose grinding if you're re-turfing, mulching, replanting the bed, or you simply want the trip hazard gone. That's the vast majority of residential jobs on the North Shore.
Choose full removal if you're pouring concrete, laying a driveway or path, building a deck or shed, installing fence posts on the stump line, or planting a large replacement tree in exactly the same hole.

Common questions
- Is stump grinding as good as full removal?
- For lawn, garden and planting, yes — grinding 150–300mm below grade gives you usable ground and the tree can't regrow. Full removal is only necessary when something structural like concrete, a driveway or a foundation is going over the stump.
- Will the tree grow back after grinding?
- No. Once the stump crown is ground out below soil level there's no growth point left, so it can't send up suckers. Species like wattle and privet can sucker from remaining surface roots, which is why we chase those roots back on jobs where it matters.
- Which is cheaper, grinding or removal?
- Grinding is always cheaper. There's no excavator, no spoil to cart, and the job is usually done in a couple of hours rather than a day.
