Anything advertised much lower is usually an hourly rate that grows once the operator is on site.
The single biggest saving is batching: additional stumps ground in the same visit are from $80 each because the travel, set-up and clean-up are already paid for. A hedge line or shelter belt is quoted by the run rather than per stump, which almost always works out cheaper again.
There are four ways to remove a tree stump: dig it out, let it rot, hire a stump grinder and do it yourself, or have it ground out professionally. The right one depends on how big the stump is, how easy it is to reach, and what you want to put in its place afterwards. Whichever you choose, locate any underground pipes, cables and irrigation near the stump before you start.
If the answer is lawn, garden bed or new planting, grinding is the right call — it's faster, tidier and cheaper, and the mulch can stay on site. If the answer is concrete, a driveway, a deck footing, a retaining wall or a new fence line, ask for full stump removal so the crown and root plate are dug out, leaving a clean hole your builder can compact and fill.

For anything larger than a shrub, an operated grinder is faster and cheaper than a weekend of hire fees.
